[Commonplace book]. 1828-1885.

An album of manuscript verse collected between 1828-1833 by Josephine Collins Roberts, a young woman in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. There are several poems by Felicia Hemans and Henry Kirke White included as well as passages from hymns, sermons and religious literature. There are also many poems signed with initials or unattributed, and some of these appear to be original compositions by Collins or her friends. The majority of entries are dated and the location (either Liverpool or Halifax) is often noted. Though Collins' hand is predominant, there are many different hands apparent in the period 1828-1833, which suggests a communal sharing of verses and passages between Collins and her friends. Collins married Robert Roberts in 1832 and had 2 children before her 1834 death at the age of 27. It seems that this commonplace book was first used by her husband's second wife, Matilda Henderson for a brief time, before passing into the hands of her daughter, Mary Rees Tupper, who recorded several pieces of original poetry in the 1850s, and her granddaughters who contributed passages in the 1870s and 1880s.
